Surfboards can generally be divided into three categories based on their size.
Each size offers a different surfing experience, and choosing the right one depends on your skill level, goals, and the type of waves you want to ride.

Shortboard

Shortboard (Approx. 160cm–190cm / 5’3”–6’3”)
Shortboards allow for sharp turns and dynamic, high-performance maneuvers.
Because they are shorter, narrower, and thinner than other types of boards, they offer less buoyancy.

That makes them exciting—but also demanding.
To ride a shortboard well, you’ll need dedication, strong paddling skills, and yes… maybe even a bit of a masochistic spirit!

Funboard

Funboard (Approx. 190cm–270cm / 6’3”–9’0”)
A funboard is a surfboard that falls between a shortboard and a longboard.
Its shape is generally closer to a longboard, with a rounded and curved nose, and it’s larger than a shortboard.

Because it offers more buoyancy and stability than a shortboard, many beginners start with a funboard before moving on to a shortboard.
It’s also popular as a second board for surfers, thanks to its versatility and ability to handle a variety of wave conditions.

Longboard

Longboard (Over 270cm / Over 9 feet)
Compared to a shortboard, longboards are much longer, wider, and thicker, providing greater buoyancy and excellent stability.
They allow surfers to take off on waves from the very beginning of the swell.

Due to their length, longboards are not suitable for steep, hollow waves.
They are ideal for beginners, older surfers with less stamina, or anyone who wants to enjoy a relaxed surfing style regardless of wave size.

So, what do you think? Seeing the comparison like this, don’t you start to get a better idea of the differences?
Exactly! The main reason we use longboards for beginner courses like trial surfing is because they have great buoyancy and provide excellent stability.
